Companion Thought - The Minor Prophets

Sep 28
2 min read

Welcome to Companion Thought, over the next few weeks we’ll take a short hike into the Scriptures using The Bible Companion as a guide. Book 8 (The Major prophets) and Book 9 (The Minor Prophets) recently released, so of course, I’ve been thinking a lot about these ancient storytellers We usually associate their writings with judgment. But these books are ultimately about hope. How to find it. How to live in it.

You might be surprised to learn that messages of the prophets are not usually directed to unbelievers. For the most part, they’re for the people of God. People who have been raised in a community of faith—like many of us—but their walk isn’t matching their talk. We’ll find out early on that they don’t really know what God’s word says and so their attitudes and actions reflect their culture, not the kingdom of God. By entering into their world, we have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes as well as bask in their victories.

You’ve probably heard of the four Major prophets—Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. But the minor prophets—there are 12—are less well known. We don’t call them minor prophets because they’re less important but because we have fewer of their writings.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to pull a few thoughts from the minor prophets and consider how they challenge us today. This won’t be a deep dive into theology, just something I hope will make you want to read more.

So get your copy of The Bible Companion Book 9 and let’s explore the minor prophets together. Next week we’ll start with Hosea and the question, “Are you a skunk?”
